How K/D and KDA work

K/D (kill/death ratio) is the simplest skill stat in shooters: how many opponents you take down for every time you go down. KDA adds assists, which credits players who deal damage or set up kills for teammates. MOBAs and hero shooters favour KDA; battle royales and arena shooters usually show K/D.

The formulas

K/D = kills ÷ deaths
KDA = (kills + assists) ÷ deaths
kills needed (no deaths) = target × deaths − kills
deaths until target at match K/D m = (target × deaths − kills) ÷ (m − target)

Example

StepResult
K/D: 450 ÷ 3001.50
KDA: (450 + 120) ÷ 3001.90
Kills needed for 2.0: 2 × 300 − 450150 kills with no deaths
At a 2.5 match K/D: (600 − 450) ÷ (2.5 − 2)300 more deaths, about 750 kills

Raising your K/D

  • Trade smarter, not more. Most deaths come from peeking the same angle twice or rotating in the open. Fewer bad deaths raises K/D faster than more kills.
  • Watch recent stats. Lifetime K/D is slow to move; a weekly or seasonal number shows whether practice is paying off.
  • Get your settings right. A consistent sensitivity and a high, stable frame rate both help aim.

Frequently asked questions

How is K/D ratio calculated?

Divide total kills by total deaths. 450 kills and 300 deaths is a K/D of 1.5. If you have zero deaths, games usually show your kills as the K/D.

What is KDA and how is it different?

KDA adds assists: (kills + assists) ÷ deaths. It's common in MOBAs like League of Legends and in hero shooters, where helping a teammate get a kill matters. Some stat sites count assists at half weight instead; this calculator lets you choose either.

What is a good K/D ratio?

1.0 means you get one kill per death, which is about average by definition across a game's players. 1.5 to 2.0 is strong in most battle royales and arena shooters, and above 3.0 is exceptional. In objective modes, K/D matters less than winning.

How many kills do I need to raise my K/D?

Kills needed = target K/D × deaths − current kills, assuming no more deaths. In practice you'll die too, so you need to play above your target K/D in each match to pull the overall number up.

Why does my K/D barely move anymore?

The more games you've played, the more each new match is averaged into a large total. After thousands of deaths, even a great game shifts lifetime K/D by a hundredth or two. Track recent or seasonal K/D to see improvement.
