How gacha pity works
Character banners in Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero all use the same system from HoYoverse. Each pull has a small chance of a 5-star (0.6%). After many pulls without one, the chance ramps up quickly (soft pity), and if you reach the 90th pull you're guaranteed a 5-star (hard pity).
When the 5-star arrives, there's a 50% chance it's the featured character. If it isn't, your next 5-star on that banner is guaranteed to be featured. This calculator follows every possible path through those rules and adds up the odds exactly, rather than simulating random pulls.
The model
n ≤ 73: 0.6%
74 ≤ n ≤ 89: 0.6% + 6% × (n − 73)
n = 90: 100%
featured on a 5-star: 50%, or 100% if guaranteed
Typical numbers (from 0 pity)
| Situation | Average pulls | 90% chance by | Worst case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Any 5-star | about 62 | about 80 | 90 |
| Featured, guaranteed | about 62 | about 80 | 90 |
| Featured, 50/50 | about 93 | about 155 | 180 |

Saving tips
- Pity carries over. It doesn't reset between character banners, so pulling a little and stopping at 70 pity sets you up well for the next banner.
- Know your guarantee. If your last 5-star on the banner wasn't the featured one, your next one is. Tick the box above and your odds jump.
- Plan for 90%, not 50%. A 50% chance means half of players in your position miss. If you really want a character, save to the 90% line.
Frequently asked questions
How does pity work in Genshin Impact?
On the character event banner the base 5-star rate is 0.6% per pull. Players' data shows the rate climbing steeply from about the 74th pull (soft pity), and the 90th pull always gives a 5-star (hard pity). Your pity counter carries over between character banners until you get a 5-star.
What is the 50/50?
When you get a 5-star on a character event banner, there's a 50% chance it's the featured character. If it isn't (you 'lose the 50/50'), your next 5-star on that banner type is guaranteed to be the featured one. Since version 5.0, Genshin's Capturing Radiance system adds extra wins after repeated losses, so real odds are a little better than this calculator's classic model.
How many pulls do I need to guarantee a character?
In the worst case, 180 pulls from zero pity without a guarantee: 90 to reach the first 5-star, lose the 50/50, then 90 more. With a guarantee, 90 pulls is the maximum. On average it takes about 93 pulls without a guarantee and about 62 with one.
Do Honkai: Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero use the same rates?
Their limited character banners follow the same pattern: 0.6% base rate, soft pity starting in the mid-70s, hard pity at 90 and a 50/50 with a guarantee after a loss. Light cone and W-Engine banners are different (hard pity at 80 and a 75/25 split), so use the custom option for those.
Are these exact official odds?
The base rate, hard pity and 50/50 are official. The soft pity increase is not published by the developers; the 6% per pull from pull 74 used here is the widely used estimate from large community pull datasets, and matches the official consolidated rate of about 1.6%.
How much currency is one pull?
160 Primogems in Genshin, 160 Stellar Jade in Star Rail and 160 Polychromes in Zenless Zone Zero buy one pull. This calculator converts your currency at 160 per pull.
