How the candle wax calculation works
Candle wax is measured by weight, but containers are sold by volume, and the "8 oz" on a jar rarely tells you how much wax it takes. The reliable way is to fill the container with water up to where the wax will stop (usually about 1/2 inch below the rim), then weigh that water. Wax is lighter than water, so you multiply the water weight by the wax's specific gravity. Most candle waxes are 0.82 to 0.95 times as dense as water, and 0.86 is the figure most suppliers and calculators use for soy and coconut blends.
That gives the total fill: wax plus fragrance oil. The fragrance load is taken as a share of that total, and the rest is wax. Doing it this way means the finished candle lands exactly at your fill line.
The formula
fragrance per candle = fill × fragrance load %
wax per candle = fill − fragrance
batch = per candle × number of candles
cost per candle = (wax lb × $/lb + oil oz × $/oz) ÷ candles + jar, wick, label
If you enter fluid ounces instead of a weighed amount, the calculator converts at 1.043 ounces of weight per fluid ounce of water. For a cylinder, it uses π × radius² × fill height, then converts cubic inches to water weight.

Tips for consistent batches
- Weigh everything. Fragrance oils vary in density, so measure oil on a scale in ounces or grams, not in a measuring cup.
- Test before scaling up. Pour one or two test candles to check wick size and scent throw. More fragrance isn't always stronger; the wick and wax matter as much.
- Add fragrance at the right temperature. Most soy waxes call for adding oil around 185°F and stirring for about two minutes to bind it.
- Plan for a second pour. Soy often sinks around the wick as it cools. Holding back a little melted wax for a top-up is easier than melting a fresh batch.
- Price for the whole job. A 3–4× materials multiplier leaves room for your time, marketplace fees and breakage.

How do I calculate how much wax I need for a candle?
Fill the container with water to where the wax will stop, weigh the water, and multiply by 0.86. Wax is lighter than water, so a jar that holds 8 ounces of water by weight holds about 6.9 ounces of soy wax and fragrance combined. Multiply by the number of candles for the batch.
How much fragrance oil do I add to soy wax?
Most candle makers use 6 to 10% fragrance, with 8% a common starting point. Many soy waxes are rated for a maximum of 10 to 12%. Going over the wax's limit can make oil seep out of the candle and does not always make it smell stronger. Check the maximum on your wax supplier's page.
Is fragrance load a percentage of the wax or of the total?
Both conventions exist. This calculator treats the load as a share of the total fill, so wax plus fragrance fits the container exactly. The other common method adds fragrance on top of the wax weight: 1 pound of wax at 8% gets 1.28 ounces of oil. The difference is small at typical loads, but stick to one method so your batches stay consistent.
How many 8 oz candles does a pound of wax make?
A jar sold as 8 oz usually holds about 8 ounces of water to the fill line, which takes about 6.3 ounces of soy wax plus 0.55 ounces of fragrance at 8%. So a pound of wax makes about 2.5 candles, and a 10 pound case makes about 25.
How should I price homemade candles?
Add up materials per candle, including wax, fragrance, jar, wick, label and packaging, then multiply by 3 to 4 for retail. Wholesale is often about half of retail. Remember your time, marketplace fees and shipping supplies, which can take a large bite out of a small order.
