How block circles are drawn
A circle in blocks is an approximation. The generator imagines a perfect circle (or ellipse) over a grid of blocks and fills each block whose center falls inside the shape. For outlines, it keeps only the blocks on the edge: those with an empty neighbour.
The thick outline counts diagonal neighbours too, so every block touches the next along a full side. That gives a wall with no gaps, ideal for towers, ponds and arenas. The thin outline only counts side neighbours, giving a lighter line that joins at the corners.
The formula
((x + 0.5 − W/2) ÷ (W/2))² + ((y + 0.5 − H/2) ÷ (H/2))² ≤ 1
For a circle, W and H are both the diameter. Using the block's center (the + 0.5) keeps the shape symmetric on all four sides.
Common sizes and block counts (thick outline)
Change the inputs above to get any size; these are popular starting points for towers and domes.
| Use | Diameter |
|---|---|
| Small tower or well | 7–9 |
| Wizard tower, silo | 11–15 |
| Castle keep, fountain | 21–31 |
| Arena, big dome | 45–65 |
Building tips
- Mark the center first. Place a marker block, then build the four straight runs at the top, bottom, left and right before filling the curved parts.
- Build one quarter, mirror the rest. Circles are symmetric, so copying one quarter four times is faster and catches mistakes.
- Use odd sizes for doors. A single center block lets you put a 1-wide door or window exactly in the middle of a wall.
Frequently asked questions
How do you make a circle in Minecraft?
Minecraft has no curves, so a circle is built from straight runs of blocks that step inward. Pick a diameter, then copy the pattern from a block grid like the one above, row by row. Start from the center line and work out to each edge so the two halves stay symmetric.
Should my circle have an odd or even diameter?
Odd diameters have a single center block, which makes it easy to line up towers, domes and doors. Even diameters have a 2 × 2 center and are a block wider than the odd size below them. Both work; odd is easier to build accurately.
What is the difference between thin and thick outlines?
A thin outline only connects blocks at their corners on the diagonals, which looks clean from above but leaves gaps you can walk or see through. A thick outline adds blocks so every block touches the next one along a side, making a solid wall.
How do I build a sphere or dome?
A sphere is a stack of circles whose diameters shrink as you move away from the middle layer. For a dome, build the widest circle at the base and reduce the diameter for each layer up. The diameter for a layer at height h above the center of a sphere with radius r is 2 × √(r² − h²).
How many blocks are in a circle?
The count is shown under the grid. For a filled circle it's close to π × r²; for an outline it's roughly the circumference, about π × diameter, plus the extra corner blocks if you choose a thick outline.
