What goes into the cost of a pet
Most of what you spend on a dog or cat is predictable once you list it out: food, routine vet care, parasite prevention, grooming, toys and treats, and care while you travel. On top of that sit optional but increasingly common costs such as pet insurance, plus a bump in the first year for adoption, spay or neuter surgery and start-up supplies.
Published surveys give wide ranges. Rover's 2025 cost report put dogs at about $1,390 to $5,295 a year and cats at about $830 to $3,095, with shelter adoption fees of roughly $30 to $455 for dogs. The low end is a healthy pet with no insurance, no boarding and home grooming; the high end includes premium food, insurance, regular grooming and frequent pet sitting. This calculator's presets sit in the middle and are meant to be edited.

Insurance is the biggest single line here, about 26% of the yearly total. Drop it and the same dog costs $2,175 a year. For comparison, the cat preset comes to $1,995 a year and about $30,525 over 15 years.
Where the preset numbers come from
- Insurance: NAPHIA's 2025 State of the Industry report lists average accident and illness premiums of about $749 a year for dogs and $386 for cats in 2024. Presets scale the dog figure by size, because larger breeds usually cost more to insure.

Tips for budgeting
- Price your own area. Call a local vet for exam and vaccine prices; urban clinics can charge twice as much as rural ones.
- Check what the adoption fee includes. Many shelters include spay or neuter, first vaccines and a microchip, so set those lines to zero if they're covered.
- Plan for age. Senior pets often need dental cleanings ($300–$1,000+), bloodwork and daily medication, so budget more for the last third of their life.
- Build an emergency cushion. Whether or not you insure, keep $1,000–$2,000 set aside for deductibles and surprises.
